Nickels Worth Money
Nickels contain no silver — except the 1942–1945 'war nickels,' which are 35% silver. Buffalo nickels and key-date Jeffersons also command strong collector premiums.
💰 What's it worth? — live melt calculator
Melt = pure metal content × recent spot (silver $32/oz). This is the bullion floor; collectible coins can be worth far more. Melting circulating US coins is illegal — this estimates intrinsic value.
Is your nickel silver?
Silver years: 1942–1945 war nickels only (35% silver).
War nickels (mid-1942 through 1945) have a large mint mark (P, D or S) above Monticello on the reverse — the only Jefferson nickels that contain silver.
