Why troy ounces and standard ounces differ
Bullion is weighed in troy ounces of 31.10 grams. The standard (avoirdupois) ounce on a kitchen scale is 28.35 grams, so treating them as equal understates the metal by about 9%.
When a dealer lists "1 oz" of silver or gold, it means one troy ounce of fine metal. A coin's gross weight can be higher: a 1 oz American Gold Eagle weighs 33.93 g because it is 22-karat, but it contains exactly one troy ounce of gold.

How do you convert troy ounces to pounds?
One troy ounce equals 0.06857 of a standard (avoirdupois) pound, so a standard pound contains 14.583 troy ounces. A troy pound is different: it is only 12 troy ounces (373.24 g).
What is a tola?
A tola is a traditional South Asian weight of 11.6638 grams, or 0.375 troy ounces. Ten-tola gold bars (116.64 g, 3.75 troy oz) are a common size in India, Pakistan and the Gulf.
Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?
