Why troy ounces vs standard ounces matter
A "troy ounce" is the standard weight in precious metals — 31.10 grams. A standard (avoirdupois) ounce — the one on your kitchen scale — is 28.35 grams. Treating them as equal gives a ~10% error.
If you buy "an ounce of silver" you're buying a troy ounce. If a coin's catalog says "weighs 1 oz", in this context it means 1 troy ounce. Always double-check when the seller is unfamiliar with bullion terminology.
